Firefox 2.0 Feedback
As most of you know I released version 2.0 of Read It Later today.
This was an update to the entire service (iPhone app, website, and Firefox Extension).
A list of changes is here:
http://readitlaterlist.com/blog/2009/12/welcome-to-20/
Despite that the new Firefox extension has been in public beta for a few months, today after the release I've gotten a considerable amount of negative feedback, mainly concerning the interface.
I >think< most of it is because 2.0 does not include an option for the compact, single line title reading list, which I'm more than happy to bring back.
Since the release, I've pulled the 2.0 extension from AMO until I feel more comfortable about how users will react to it.
Know that every intention I have with the RIL is only to make it better. The new interface for 2.0 is meant to be less cluttered and more simple than in 0.9.
I want to find out more about what you guys want and make sure that it's not just a vocal minority.
If you have tried 2.0, do you love it? Do you hate it? Are you impartial? What do you like about it? What do you not like?
Compare it to 0.9 and please be specific as possible.
Thanks for your support, this isn't just >my< add-on, it's yours too, I want you guys to love it just as much as I do.
In Progress - Temporary Workaround Suggested by Developer:
Hey everyone
Have an update for you, I just pushed version 2.0.1.
Thank you for the feedback, this is exactly what I was looking for.
You guys should all know by now how much I care about your feedback, we haven't gone through the past 2 years for nothing :) I'm always listening. If you have a problem, just ask, no need to scream and shout, I want RIL to work well for everyone.
That said, I will admit I did not do a good job prepping everyone for the changes in 2.0. Not everyone follows updates on Twitter or on the blog and many had no idea these changes have been in the works for months.
First, what's new in 2.0.1:
- Fixed Google Reader Support
- Readded Compact List view option
- Readded Close tab when saved option
- Fixed Auto Mark issue
- Replaced + icon
I've also written some detailed guides on the questions everyone has asked the most.
If you are upset about the loss of storing your items in FF's bookmarks, please read:
http://www.ideashower.com/support/read-it-later/20-syncing-and-bookmarks/
If you lost items during the transition or the order of items got messed up, please read:

If you are having display issues or do not like how the interface looks, please read:

Thank you all for your support. Again, if you have a question or suggestion, please let me know and we can make RIL rock for everyone.

Thing I miss most is information about when link was added to list, rest of the interface goes fine in line with visual update.
Posted Dec 14 09 reply
The other thing is terrible performance with 1000+ elements, it's almost impossible to scroll through the list - it doesn't hurt me because I use FF mostly for saving stuff and all reading happens on iPhone (2.0 FTW, it's totally awesome).
I am huge fan no matter what ;)-

Totally agree! The one thing I miss is the day added info. But definately love this extension and the iPod app! Great Job!

My niggles:
- I preferred the tick rather than the + in the address bar
- I can no longer see the read it later button in Google reader
- I preferred the ticks shown by default on the list drop down (rather than on hover)

I didn't get the chance to play with 2.0 very much but as best I could tell it was the same as the beta version except for the issue of it not showing up in Google Reader.

I also mentioned after trying the beta that I missed the old feature of having the option to have a tab close after you click the checkmark in the address bar to add it to your list - to which you responded that you'd work on adding it back in a future version. Certainly that was a "nice to have" feature and nothing too serious.
I appreciate your work on this! It's a very valuable addition to Firefox.

No, dont' bring back the tick. I love the plus sign. Everything looks so much more refined now.

I think its an improvement overall. I like the new interface and the ability to show in the sidebar (which might have been there already). I had the condensed view in the previous version but now that I've placed it in the sidebar, I like the expanded view. The options page(s) are more clear and concise and no longer lose the OK/Cancel buttons on the Appearance tab. I usually go the website (/unread) directly anyway.
Posted Dec 14 09 Version: 0.9948 and 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
At first I was confused with the plus sign in the URL bar but I get it. I do think it's inconsistent with the whole "check it off" motif - even though it's more of an "add" action. I'm probably just used to the check mark idea.
The only "real" problem I have is that the site is blocked at my work under "Free Software/Download" category in WebSense. I can get to it by using SSL (https://) but when I click on the Toolbar icon directly it only goes to the non-SSL site. Can this be an option to redirect all list items and the icon to go to the https:// site?
Excellent work. The iPhone app has turned out really well and I was happy to help beta test it. -
Dave P
I've only been using it for a couple of days and to be honest its a big, slick improvement. I haven't had to change much in the way I use Readitlater. In fact, with the ease of tags - and the use of tags in iPhone, I can't see why I ever need to use Instapaper any more!
Posted Dec 15 09 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I'm actually finding the interface simpler than the previous version which seemed 'confused' whenever I have marked articles read from the iPhone.
My only wish, if we're talking about it, is an easier way to tag multiple items - as I use this to clean out my iPhone initial list. Best way is to allow tagging in Google Reader the way you have it when you click to save (the only reason I don't like using this on the Google Reader is that it makes a really messy title which makes it hard to peruse).
Either way I'm happy with FF update and absolutely stoked about the 2.0 iPhone app. -
Paul
I updated the iPhone software and Firefox plugin to 2.0 today, and have little to complain about. I had some initial syncing issues that are more or less caused by the fact that my work computer is using the 2.0 plugin, but my home computer is not (as it's been pulled temporarily). Aside from that, I'm really pleased with this upgrade. I would definitely use the compact version, but it's not a must. I trust Nate's UI design skills more than I trust my own opinions, so I'm good with whatever you decide on, Nate!

the yelloy arrow is plain ugly, hard to recognize over the grey background (OK - the old one was not so pretty either ...) and the plus-sign in the 'awesome' bar is way to big - I liked the checkmark which just changed colors much better and less intrusive.
Posted Dec 15 09 reply
The sorting of items is also wrong, what is presented as newest are definitely NOT the newest items I added. AND RIL2 killed entries - I noticed it by the count so I don't know which RIL selected for trashing.
I'm pretty upset especially about the fact that I can't go back to the better (for me) working version 0.9x. how do I reinstall the old version? my first try ended up with ALL RIL-items LOST! -

I liked the old way to store bookmarks better (in the FF bookmark folder) - it was transparent and easy to manage them outside RIL. Now I don't see them anymore and tools like Xmarks which I prefer can't sync them either. Too bad! Please give the user to freedom which tool to use for online syncing.
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
The new list uses too much room too, the compact format of the old version is better
Because reinstalling the old version doesn't work (throws an error message with lots of exceptions) I'll have to reinstall my whole Firefox setup via TimeMachine! Thank you very much!-

The problem I ran into with Xmarks and RIL 0.9 both installed is that sometimes my RIL list would disappear, or would be duplicated by Xmarks.

I'll put in my $0.02 that I prefer the single-line condensed view as well. I downloaded 2.0 at work today and I am going to stick with the old version at home for a whlie now that I see the new version doesn't have the condensed view. I hope you'll put that option back in, because this is otherwise a great addon!
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
Oh, and I had to switch to scrollable view with 2.0 because the non-condensed view kind of slid off the bottom edge of my screen. Maybe I need to back off the 29 lines when I don't have condensed view, I'd need to play with it some more to be sure. But scrollable is fine. -

I love the new extension. The iPhone version is awesome and I'm more able to identify pages and eliminate my reading list. The firefox version is also great.

I couldn't get Google Reader (.co.uk) integration to work but I don't use it anyway (I use 'Star') and I really only use the rss feed of my links to pull into GR too- that said, I much prefer the old/tick icon - and I changed the shortcut key to CTRL+Q.

I prefer the Qompact interface more, and I want the red vš (tick) to be visible all the time.

And I also think that the list view is too short. I have scrolling (not pages) enabled and even with Qompact view I don't see enough results at a time, and I don't want to bring up the sidebar, that's rare.

Overall the new version is great and unlike some of the guys above, I really like the new design elements. iPhone app is amazing - nice work. A couple of minor niggles:
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
- Condensed view needs to come back (glad to hear that's coming soon)
- I also used to like the option that closed the tab when I added something to the reading list
- Sometimes the sync between iPhone and FF is slow and needs to be done manually
iPhone
- option to set only the last X items to download rather than everything (I have over 1000 articles)
- on the share / Services menu - allow me to hide services I don't use to save space/make it quicker
Future enhancements...
- Integration with feedly + the Guardian iPhone app
- Be able to launch all articles in Text View as default and not have to click on the 'T'
- Auto-tagging (i.e. parse the title of the page to pull out the tags... e.g. 'BBC to offer journalism masterclasses free online / Media / guardian.co.uk' should give me the tags: BBC, guardian, media, journalism). Would be incredibly useful to get smart tagging so I can read my news around certain topics without having the hassle of tagging every article (since I save lots every day). Maybe you could do this via rules instead (i.e. label all articles from pitchfork.com, stereogum.com and drownedinsound.com as 'music')
Overall, love it. Keep up the good work. -
Todd
I already mentioned in another topic that I would like to have the option to automatically close a tab when marked for later reading. I've noticed since though that if I have "automatically mark read" on, then it apparently marks it read before I have time to close the tab manually, and doesn't show up in the list at all. So now I have to manually mark the page as read to keep that from happening. This, along with RIL missing from Google Reader, completely messes up the workflow I've gotten used to.
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I notice that some people are complaining about the list not being in bookmarks anymore. This actually doesn't bother me at all because I use Google Bookmarks (with the GMarks extension) for all my bookmarks, and the RIL list was the only thing in my Firefox Bookmarks anyway. Maybe you could have an option to do it either way.-
Todd
Hmm. Reading that back, I don't think I was clear about something. I have to turn off "Automatically mark read" to make sure the page shows up in my list, which forces me to manually mark as read the pages that I do open to read. This is what messes up my workflow. The whole issue should be fixed when you reinstate the option to automatically close the tab.

Lots of great comments! I like the new version, but I do miss the compact view. I would like to see if I have applied a tag to an entry in the list without having to click on edit. Also, if I filter on tags, it would be nice just click the RIL button and have it navigate just within the current filter. That would help me prioritize what to read at work versus home. Sorting also seems inconsistent when sorting by date, so it would be useful to have an "added" attribute that we can see on the list (e.g. skip over "old news").

I like the list not being in the bookmarks anymore, and instead using the RSS feed. That is a fantastic touch.

I also miss the compact view. When I have titles that are more than one line, it resizes the reading list page; that moves the "next" button. It's like a moving target! The new plus sign startled me at first but getting used to it.
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I liked the clunky book symbol, but can live with the yellow arrow-y thing.
Miss the dates.
BUT my biggest problem is all my previously saved OFFLINE pages won't come up anymore. I had over 700 pages stored and when I'm offline and click them I get "file not found". I submitted this as a problem, hope I get a clue on how to retrieve those pages - they are still there in my computer but I can only pull them up by opening them from the RIL offline folder, which sucks because they all are named RIL(bunch of numbers).
So, moving targets AND a crapshoot!
I love this addon and appreciate the hard work you have put into it, Nate. Private comment hidden -

About v. 2.0.1...
Posted Dec 15 09 Version: 2.0.1 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
Love that Google Reader integration and the "close tab when saved" feature is back. Appreciate that.
One question/suggestion: correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, when you clicked on the RIL button in previous versions, your list of saved items would drop down and remain static until you closed it or clicked away. So you could open multiple items, one after the other, and the list would not go away. But now the list disappears after each saved item you open, so you have to click on the RIL icon for each saved item you want to open.
Is this an option you could add, or add back? -
Adam
The previous version performed 99% of what I needed to do. The new version (2.0) took everything away - primarily ability to retain the bookmark information locally on my computer. Would suggest giving users choice to have the data retained locally or elsewhere. Not being given the choice is a BAD idea.

1. The "scrollable list" view on the popup can be used only on the active/unread list. Can this option be added to all the lists (which is a great idea, by the way)
2. The Text view and its integration into the popup is superb. One suggestion...in the earlier version when you moused over the items in the list, the FF status bar showed the full URL. Now the URL is impossible to see, even the tooltip in the popup and the Edit function show only the Title of the page. Can you please show the URL somewhere?
3. Can we have some more choice of fonts and text sizes on the Text view?
Thanks a lot

One more comment regarding the Google Reader integration....
Posted Dec 16 09 reply
I am using the Colorful List View script in Google Reader that colors the items. In earlier versions of RIL, the clear/red checkmark was clearly visible. Now with 2.0, it is a little harder to see the clear/yellow icon among all the colors. Can you change this back to the red checkbox or something that is more easily visible? Thanks -

Thanks for all your work. I like the at least seemingly faster sync and new features.
Posted Dec 16 09 Version: 2.0.1 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I feel much the same way as seriocomic
- I preferred the tick rather than the + in the address bar
- I don't like the new look with the black bar at the top
- I don't like that the icon has been changed from the book with the bookmark (that makes me think read it later) to just the ribbon
- I wish there were still a link to the online reading list in the main window (I do like how you've integrated the read links into it but sometimes I want to go to the online one)
Those 3 are just my preference though.
I do really wish you would change this
- the ticks not shown by default on the list drop down (rather than on hover)
Part of the ease of this program (which I assume is what your are going for) was having the checks on the left side always showing. Making something hover to appear is always bad in my book because I have bad wrists and want to limit movement when it shouldn't be needed. Perhaps you could make it an option.

I also just noticed that the day counter since it was bookmarked is gone.
Posted Dec 16 09 reply

I'm going back and forth between computers so I'm better able to see the differences in the versions. The condensed scrollable list doesn't show nearly as many links before using the scroll bar. This is what I deem pointless extra scrolling and clicking.

What I think would be good to add:
- allow to choose if click on link should close popup or it should stay (as in 0.9);
- add tags without opening popup (keyboard shortcut or right-click on "tick" in the urlbar);
- turn on/off date on the right of the link (as in 0.9).
Thanks. -

I really preferred the old icon (both the one in address bar and the one on the toolbar). Any chances to get it back, even as an option?
Posted Dec 16 09 Version: 2.0.1 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
The buttons shown on the statusbar would benefit from infotips (help text displayed when mouse is over the button).
It would be nice if there was a way to tag the page currently being displayed without locating it on the list. Alternatively tt would be nice if there was a way to quickly locate the page on the list
It would be nice if I could ask for random item tagged by specific tag.

Why can't I set Items per page for Scrollable List? The previous FireFox plugin version had more items per page for Scrollable List
Posted Dec 16 09 Version: 2.0 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
Much more important... Why doesn't Compact show how many days ago I created a bookmark anymore? The old version did, and I really miss it!
It gave me a useful quick reminder of how long ago I created the bookmark. I really liked that feature, because it took up such little space, and I found it very useful. For example, if I have 5 bookmarks that were created 10 days ago, it's a way for me to get something similar to grouping/tagging without having to actually manually use grouping/tagging.
Thank You

I do have a cell phone, but only for texting and phone calls. I have no plans on getting "connected" with an iPod or any mobile appliance, I work exclusively from a desktop.
Only issues I have are I miss the "# days" since last added and there is one bug since .9; the unread count on the Navigation tool bar is obscured by the little drop down arrow.

Nate - Very awesome update. Thanks for all your hard work on this. The 2.01 update is very slick & professional and is a big step up from the excellent .9 version.

Just a couple of suggestions...first, could you add back (as an option) the days added counter to the list?
Also, I am a heavy user of Google Reader and one thing I always wanted to see is a readitlater button at the bottom of the article as well.
Currently Google has a star at the top of the article, and the "Add Star" text at the bottom...saves time from scrolling back to the title to star it.
I'd like to see the same behavior for RIL, probably just text titled "ReadItLater" w/ the new icon just to the right of the Add Star.
Other than those 2 little things, 2.01 is running great! -

I'm utterly disabled in using this now that the "read this later" right-click option is removed. Adding options is a great idea - such as saving by clicking the button - which I really had to pour over the options to figure out (and I disabled it somehow and am having a hard time figuring out how to re-enable it). But I don't think just removing options is a good idea unless there are *very* compelling reasons. And in this case, I don't see a compelling reason to remove the right-click to save to reading list option. Again, I'm totally thrown by that. Even disappointed.

Uh.. never mind. I don't know why that option wasn't there - and now suddenly I'm seeing it when I right click. ?? Maybe it had to do with upgrading Firefox to 3.5.6 and restarting?

Love the new design but as far as the FF addon is concerned, I've got a big complaint : the new version makes it impossible to save a page with a simple right-click. Could you fix that ? It was real handy for me. Thanks.

I know you put in a lot of work, it shows!
One comment I have is that you talked about 2.0.1 being a step toward unification, but it doesn't add up.
The icons are different across different platforms (PC vs iPod App). Why is the check mark in Firefox address bar red on a saved entry, but empty in the same entry on the iPod. It was confusing. I get the concept of "checking" it off but the two different methods don't mesh.
Keep up the good work!

The only thing I'm missing is that in the old version when you clicked an entry in the RIL list, it would just open it as a tab and would keep you on your current tab, not switch over to it and close the list. I had found it really useful as I could open tons of tabs at one time without having to go back and open the list again to click another.

In RIL 2.0.1, middle-click on the toolbar button doesn't open a saved page in a new tab like it did in version 0.9948. Can you add that functionality back, please?

Also, the popup list disappears after you click on an item. That is frustrating when you want to open multiple pages. I know you can switch to the sidebar display and it stays open but I liked the popup (or dropdown, as I called it) list. Sidebar takes up too much screen real estate for me :)

The icons next to my saved sites is always a "clock". On previous versions the icon would always be the icon of the site. For example: a page saved from Youtube has the Youtube icon. But in the newest version 2.0.1 the icon is always a "clock".
Any help is appreciated,

I generally like the new version, but I do have a few issues with it. The biggest one is speed.
Posted Dec 18 09 Version: 2.01 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I seem to be the only one having this problem -- I've seen lots of comments on how snappy the new extension is, but for me responsiveness has gone way down. Now when I click on the read-it-later icon (or hit alt+w) it literally takes 2-4 seconds to save, during which time my UI is frozen; I can't even scroll down if I'm skimming the article.
This is particularly crippling in Google Reader -- I make a habit on noisy feeds like BoingBoing and Lifehacker of skimming the headlines and marking the interesting ones RIL, but with it taking several seconds per save doing so is absolutely crippling. I can click the other buttons while the UI is frozen, and they'll eventually detect the click and update, but in the meantime I feel like I should be making a sandwich.
I suspect the problem has to do with the size of my reading list, which contains somewhere over five thousand items. It's understandable that this causes some slowdowns -- but with the old version the wait wasn't usually more than a quarter to a half a second (estimated -- I never felt the need to time it).
Otherwise, I do generally like the update. I rather miss the old checkmark and book icons, but I don't particularly object to the new ones; I think just adding an option to use the old icons would be best. And I do think adding an option to save the list to the bookmarks would be a good addition. Certainly I think that the "days since added" marker needs to come back -- perhaps as an option.
One last note on the slowdown -- it's possible that this could be some sort of addon conflict, and I may try disabling other addons later and see if it makes a difference. If I do I'll report back.
My OS is Windows XP Pro x64. -

Thanks for the speedy development and don't let the haters get you down - this is a wonderful extension and a great update.
I love the new layout (much more informative) and the ability to put the list in the sidebar. I miss the ability to sync using Weave (no offense to RIL sync, but I just prefer to use one solution for all my syncing needs), but given that you have an API, I think I will just add a Weave extension to sync the data. If I get the time to make it, I'll share it with the community.
You're responsiveness to questions/comments/concerns is a great example to developers everywhere.

Although i am not a developer i have closely cooperated with people who do write mods.
Posted Dec 21 09 Version: 0.9 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
One of the biggest sorrow for every developer has been the negative feedback - people are being very very ungrateful. They want things fast, free and do not say even thank you (latter being one of the reasons why some just quit).
Only thing you can do is to keep trying as there are a lot of people who appreciate your work (I among them).
Furthermore, although i still use 0.9 (as i always allow couple of months for major bugs to be discovered and fixed) I must say that probably 2.0 works (it seemed less complicated - in other words more simple, this however upsets lots of "IT-technicians" who want 1000 options to configure). Still, most options were included in new version and interface is cleaner, so I will update in a couple of months.
Considering all the above I would like to thank the developer (Nate) for investing his free time (and money) into this mod. I hope you will support it in the future (and do not sell it nor start to use advertisements as compulsory in it as that would defeat the purpose of free mod at least for me).
Best regards
Aeth
P.S. For nostalgic people, you might want to consider to bring back old icon so people who update to 2.0 would feel more at home (and of course option to change that icon). Private comment hidden-

If you click on the drop down arrow next to the Read It Later icon on your toolbar, then click on the the button that looks like a "nut" that is the Options button. Once that opens Log In to your account. If you haven't set up an account and you see a bunch of small letters, just follow the instructions to for a Username and Password. It's super easy. Then you just log in. Once you do that, it will take you to the website: http://readitlaterlist.com/unread and there you will see two options at the top of the page, Unread or Read AND you will see all your pages. The way I see it is this is where everything is archived, as long as your using the Sync option and have set-up a username and password (like I mentioned before). From there you can mark things Read or Unread.
I hope this helps because I'm awful at typing out instructions. :)
Happy Christmas,

I usually have around 100 tabs open and use RIL as a means to reduce the tab count and RAM usage of my Firefox. RIL 0.9 is what i need: Just a long list of one bookmark per line, sorted by the time added (oldest first). I click a button to close the current tab and add it to the list. When I click a link in the RIL list, it is opened in a new tab and the item is removed from the list. That's all I need. I do not use synchronization.
Posted Dec 22 09 Version: 2.0.1 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
The following features seem to be missing in RIL 2.0:
- a sidebar button for my All-in-One-Sidebar
- display of the number of days when the item was added
- storing the items (or at least a copy of them) in a bookmark folder (easy to backup, most compatible way to use them with other extensions)
I reverted to version 0.9 and would rather use another extension than version 2.0, but I will check back from time to time to see whether there is a new version that fits my taste. In the meantime, is there a way to prevent Firefox from updating the extension, so I don't have to untick the checkbox on the update dialog every time? Private comment hidden -

Hi Nate, thanks for your responsiveness to all this! I like having the compact view back. There are two other features I'd like to see returned:
Posted Dec 23 09 Version: 2.0.1 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
1. "date added" is very useful for me, can you bring that back in to the compact view?;
2. I'll just quote "Dan" above since he said it well:
"...when you clicked on the RIL button in previous versions, your list of saved items would drop down and remain static until you closed it or clicked away. So you could open multiple items, one after the other, and the list would not go away. But now the list disappears after each saved item you open, so you have to click on the RIL icon for each saved item you want to open.
Is this an option you could add, or add back? "
Thanks, dlc -

Another update: 2.0.2
Posted Dec 23 09 reply
This new version brings back a few old features from 0.9 in addition to important bug fixes:
- 'X days ago' is available as an option in the list view again.
- Right click to save a page for later is back.
- Users with master passwords can now opt to save their password differently so they can skip the prompt at startup.
- Fixed text-view encoding issues with non-english character sets.
- Fixed url not appearing in status bar on compact list view
Thanks again for all of the feedback since the 2.0 release. It's been eye opening to see how you can have some features that you never hear users talk about until they are gone. As you guys have seen, I value all of your feedback and work hard on delivering what people want. In return, all I ask is to hear from you.
If you like what RIL does for you or you like a specific feature, just send me an email, or post a review on the Mozilla add-ons site. This can go for all software that you use. If the only feedback I ever get is suggestions for new features or reports of broken ones, it's hard to always make sure the ones you do like stay just the way they are.
From the passionate feedback I've gotten since releasing 2.0, I know a lot of you love RIL just as much as I do. So shoot me a line and let's talk about it :)
That's it for version 2.0.2. More to come soon. Have an awesome holiday weekend!

Hi, Nate. Thank you for Read It Later. I don't use any of the sync features, but I still enjoy the ability to just click on the yellow arrow to add a bookmark to my reading list.
Posted Dec 24 09 Version: 2.0.2 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I still have just one UI nit to pick. In RIL 2.0.2, middle-click on the toolbar button doesn't open a bookmarked page in a new tab like it did in version 0.9948. Can you add that functionality back in Firefox, please? That will make it consistent with the other Firefox buttons, i.e. if a left-click opens a page in the current tab, then a middle-click will open it in a new tab.-

I was just wondering from the http://readitlaterlist.com/ website, at the top right of the page where it says Login, if you've set up an account? If you do this ALL of your saved pages should be there--online AND from clicking on the "yellow arrow" from your toolbar. Also, on our toolbar where you see the new RIL "yellow arrow", if you click the arrow, the drop down box will show something that looks like a bolt and when you click that it says Options. From there you can click on Appearances>under Reading List make sure that Expanded is selected. You can also set up your account here or at the website I mentioned above.
I sure hope this helps because as I've said before I'm not so great at explaining things in writing. I apologize for that. I had to play with RIL to get everything set up like I like it, work out the 2 issues I had and get my desktop and laptop in sync with each other. Now it's awesome and works great!

Ok, in response to my problem above, I've discovered that the pages I'm saving ARE appearing in the main list, but for some weird reason they're appearing on page 13 (I've got 15 pages at the moment)
Posted Dec 24 09 Version: 2.0.2 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I've ordered the list from oldest to newest, and up to page 13 they're in order of date, but then suddenly there's new bookmarks I've made after this update, and then after my most recent one, it continues with previously saved pages until page 15.
I hope that made sense. -

I am now also enjoying the offline features, thanks for putting those in. -

Nate, I'm having the same problem with the order of the list since I updated to 2.0.2 (an hour ago) - the latest pages I have saved are showing up in the "oldest" section of the list, and they are adding backwards, i.e. the newest page shows up UNDER the last page I saved.
Posted Dec 24 09 Version: 2.0.2 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
And I can only find my "newest" pages by changing the order to "oldest" view. It is breaking my list into incomprehensiblity.
Also, with "show date" on, only the newest pages are showing the date. I even tried to re-download all the pages and still only have a date on the pages I saved since the update.
I posted this on the problem section and I hope you check it out! I'm hesitant to save more pages today until this gets fixed because they are getting all scrambled up. -

Your original post said compare it to .9 as much as possible. So far, 2.0 seems pretty cool. Here is the best comparison that I can think of:
Posted Dec 30 09 Version: 2.0.3 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
One feature I miss from .9 compared to 2.0 is that items marked for reading later no longer are searchable from the url bar in Firefox. I imagine this is because the ReadItLater items are no longer stored in the bookmarks. If it is possible to get this back, that would be awesome. If not, I can work around it.
The xx days ago feature was re-added in 2.0.3 (I think). Can you make the text color/size/face on this choose-able? On my systems, this is coming across as a bright, almost neon green. Also, it is hard to read the text. I'm not sure if Firefox is trying to do some sort of re-sizing on the font or what is going on. The best I can do to describe it is that it's almost like someone took an eraser and wiped off half the text. I didn't have this issue with .9
Relating to my first "issue". Is it possible to add a hot-key to automatically put the cursor in ReadItLater's search box, if the url searching is not possible?
Otherwise, all of the improvements with 2.0 are great. The new interface is awesome. I like the look a lot more. Private comment hidden -

I love RIL so much I am willing to wait through all this chaos. My issues right now:
Posted Dec 30 09 Version: 2.0.3 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
The popup list only lets you select or delete one item before it disappears. I am using the sidebar for now but really preferred the popup. Can't it be made static until you click elsewhere, like it was before?
The "hover" function seems to slow things down. I preferred the static checkmarks so I could "unclick" items in a bunch rather than wait for the item to disappear, which resizes the list and makes me have to reposition the mouse. I never use the text or edit functions and it seems those could be buttons on the title bar rather than in the list itself.
The "saved X days ago" only goes back to the day of the 2.0 release so everything I'd saved prior now says "15 days ago" regardless of when it was actually saved.
I had been in the habit of clearing my FF history when I closed my browser. During this transition I started to retain it since I could still pull things up from FF that way. This morning I went back to erase history on FF close, and when I opened my reading list again all the icons of various pages were replaced by a generic blank page icon. The pages I have saved today now have the usual icons and a few others have filled in but the majority are "blank page". What the heck is happening?
I hate to say it but I'm getting a bit leery of what RIL is going to do to my list next! This stuff never happened with the older version. It just worked.
I have read the instructions on how to downgrade but I also see some people have had problems with it, so I really don't want to muck about in about:config - will there ever be an option to install the old version instead? You could call it RIL Lite or something.
I should add that I use RIL only for storing offline content. I don't have another computer or device to synch to and all this extra functionality is not useful for me. I guess one of the problems with developing an app like this is that people use it in so many different ways and it's hard to predict what is important to keep and what to improve and what to leave well enough alone.
I am hopeful that RIL will settle down soon and be stable like it was before because I really REALLY love it and want ti to be the best it can be for everyone. Thank you so much for your work and your feedback on people's issues.

Now I just get the bookmark items and not the RIL items. I have to search them in the Reading List. So I have to search 2 times now.

First off - I just wanted to say that I love the new version not being a part of firefox explicitly, and I REALLY REALLY LOVE the way you can click the edit button and tag your entries directly on the list popup, and the list of tags that you can check off.
Posted Jan 9 10 Version: 2.0.3 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
I do have a couple suggestions, however:
- Could you put a warning in when you delete something directly from the list? Like an "ARE YOU SURE" popup warning? Or alternatively, please leave the deleted item on the list until you've closed the popup so you can undo the deletion by clicking on the checkbox again (like it worked in the prior version)?
I've managed to delete quite a few things accidentally when either paging from page to page (since the last checkbox is right above the "next" link), or by accidentally clicking the check rather than the edit icon, or just by clicking on a check randomly. (I don't know how I do that, but I do.) It's like OH CRAP and I'm not fast enough to undo it. This is especially frustrating when I've done it via random click or when paging, since many times I'm not sure what I've deleted!
- If it would be easy to do, could you add an option to hide the "T" icon in the list? I don't use the text function at all, and I keep clicking it when I mean to click the edit icon. (I found the "hide T icon" for the toolbar, but I don't see one for the list itself.)
- If there is some way to add an option to keep the popup list open after opening a page, I'd love that. I like to open several pages at once in different tabs, and that'd make it easier - so I wouldn't have to reopen the list to grab another page, and then another one...etc. That'd also help if I'm opening items in middle or end of the list, since I wouldn't have to navigate back to that page each time.
Again, thank you so much for the add-on - I do use it multiple times daily, and these are minor niggles in comparison to the incredible usefulness of the app. Thank you very much for working so hard to create/improve it. -
John
Was a great add-on. Really was my add-on number one.
