Read it Later - Firefox Extension BETA

Idea #29 - Posted in Launched Install Comments (981) - Traffic & Stats - Updates  -
  • Save pages to a reading list to read when you have time
  • Offline Reading Mode - Read the items you’ve saved for later on the plane, train, or anywhere
  • Access Anywhere - Manage your list in any browser, on any device
  • Sync Between Computers - Sync your reading list with any number of computers, work or home
  • After reading, bookmark pages on your preferred bookmarking service
  • Click to Save Mode - Quickly batch a reading list just by clicking on interesting links

Overview

This Firefox extension allows you to save pages of interest to read later. It eliminates cluttering of bookmarks with sites that are merely of a one-time interest. A commenter below (Chris) summed it up very well: “It’s a ’staging area’ for bookmarks.”

Version 0.9 Released!

The new version of Read It Later for Firefox 3 is now available and hosts a whole new bundle of features. Skip down below the video for what’s new!

Video Example: How This Can Be Used with News Sites

If you have a personalized homepage (i.e. Pageflakes or iGoogle) or frequent news sites like (i.e. Digg or CNN), you can quickly scan all of the headlines on the site, saving all links of interest by using the Click to Save mode and saving to your list. When you are done, just start going through your list, uninterrupted. Beats having to go back and forth though-out the site!

How it Came to Be

I found that during the day (and especially at work), that I would run into sites and articles that I wanted to read, but couldn’t at that time. Mostly, I would just send the link to myself via email, and in the end, they would never get read because I’d lose it in my inbox. I needed a simple way to keep track of the things I wanted to read, but didn’t want to bookmark (at least not at first).

Why this Helps

Excluding this plugin, I see two options for creating a list of pages you want to read:

The Old Way:

  1. You can log the URLs by emailing yourself or writing them in a text file. This is cumbersome and hard to move through or find.
  2. Bookmark the site in a special tag or folder of ‘To-Read-Later’. This works well for keeping your links in a single source, but it is a pain to go in and remove or re-categorize each page after you read it. Also, if you use an online bookmarking service, it means you’ll have to login in and go through a few clicks before getting to your list.

The above methods are honestly, just workarounds to what should be a simple task. The Read it Later extension is meant to provide an easier solution.

The New Way:

  1. When you come across something you want to read later, simply click the ‘Read Later’ button and the page is instantly inserted into your reading list.
  2. Then when you have some free time, just click ‘Reading List’ and it’ll pull up something for you to read.
  3. When you are finished, click Mark it As Read and it will be removed from your list.
If you found what you read to be worth bookmarking, you can use the dropdown under Mark it As Read to add it to your Firefox bookmarks or any online bookmark service such as Del.icio.us.

New Features for Firefox 3

The newest version of Read It Later, exclusive to Firefox 3 has been improved across all levels. Using Firefox 3’s new Places architecture, the extension can now fully perform the way it was meant to be. Here are some of the best new features.

One Click Saving, Sorting, and Tagging

Read It Later’s interface tightly integrates with Firefox 3’s new bookmarking system. Along side the ‘one-click bookmark’ star on the Firefox location bar, Read It Later shows up as a simple checkmark. Click to instantly save the current page to your list, click it again to mark it as read.

Power users will find that clicking the star next to the red checkmark allows you to use Firefox 3’s tagging system to tag the items in your Reading List. These tags can be used to filter your reading list for quick searching and organization.

You can pull up your reading list by clicking the down arrow on the main Read It Later button. From here you can flip through your entire list to find something to read. To help find something specific you can sort your list by date added, site, and title. If you need to do some cleaning up, you can easily mass mark items as read by unchecking them from your list.

Sync Your List With Any Number of Computers

Your reading list can be synced to any number of computers with Firefox, whether it be at home or at work. Each list is assigned a unique feed id and password, simply plug it into any other Read It Later installation and any items, including tags, you add or remove will be carried over no matter where you are.

Offline Reading

If you want to do some reading while away from an internet connection, on the plane or train, before disconnecting click ‘Read Offline’ to have Read It Later download the pages from on your list for offline access. Switch Firefox to ‘Work Offline’ and you are good to go!

Access Anywhere

Your reading list can be managed/viewed in any internet browser (ex. Firefox, IE, Safari) and on any device (ex. iPhone).  Bookmarklets for other browsers make saving and reading your list incredibly easy.  Check out http://readitlaterlist.com for more.

RSS Feeds

You can access your reading list from anywhere and any device through personalized RSS feeds of your reading list. Use them to read your list while away, from your feed reader or share your findings with others.

Click to Save Mode

Fly through your personalized homepages, news aggregators, and social media sites by switching on ‘Click to Save’ mode. Push Alt + M (customizable) and any link you click won’t be followed through, instead it will be added to your reading list. (See the video above for a great example of this).

Save All Tabs for Later

For those of you who keep a large number of tabs open with pages you want to read, now you can simply right click the tab-bar and select ‘Save All Tabs for Later’ and every page open will be saved into your Reading List.

Installation/Setup Instructions

To install Read It Later, simply click the ‘Install’ button at the top of this post. For detailed instructions how how to sync computers and other Read It Later functions, you can view the Read It Later User’s Notes here.

Firefox 2 Support

Because the difference in bookmark architecture between Firefox 2 and Firefox 3, maintaining support for both versions would essentially be maintaining two separate products. Therefore, I will only be continuing to develop for Firefox 3 and future versions. If for some reason you do not want to upgrade to Firefox 3, you can can download an earlier version of Read It Later. Keep in mind, it does not have many of the new features described above. Download: Read It Later 0.80 for Firefox 2 only.

  1. Hi
Great idea. You wouldn’t by any chance have implemented a hotkey and RSS feed, would you? The hotkey would allow for much faster adding. It would detect the currently focused hyperlink, copy page title, URL and discovery date and output those elements to a feed that you’d host.

If you’d add those features I’m convinced you would definitely trigger people’s interest. It could be a new tech start-up.

    What do you think?

    September 30th, 2007 Marjolein Hoekstra
  2. @Marjolein

The hotkey is a good idea, I’ll add that to my list of updates.

Check back soon for more on the ’start-up’ aspect.

    September 30th, 2007 Nate Weiner
  3. I would suggest to make it so you can choose to read it in order or random. You might choose out articles in a certain order and want to read it in that order.

  4. @Chi

Yeah - that’s exactly what I was going to ask. I have foxmarks that syncs my bookmarks between windows profiles and two separate machines - if only I could hook this in with those syncs? That would complete my world! ;)

  5. this is awesome…im a big fan of digg and use firefox ..i tend to open links in new tabs and then read them one by one.it wasnt a hassle but this makes it easier.
    Thanx!

  6. I second Chi’s suggestion to support some form of central listing. I’m always finding material worth attention later while at work, and that later usually comes around at home.

No need to provide the service, either. I’m sure many of us can handle directing the extension to an ftp server we can use, or an svn repository, etc. Throw in optional bookmark synching and you’d be providing all the content management (distributed or in a single location) that 99% of us need, in a single extension and without tying us to various crappy online services.

  7. The “Read Later” plugin is great idea. I hope that you continue development. I would love a drop down selection of reading material rather than having to flash through the items to find the one I want to read now. Good luck! Thanks.

  8. Would like to see integrated with Foxmarks so they can be synchronized between computers. This way you can mark things on a work computer and read on the home PC.

  9. The extension appears to have a problem… I can move the read later button to another toolbar, but the reading list button can be moved to a different toolbar or even removed from the toolbar

    November 9th, 2007 Anon E Moose
  10. Actually, neither button can be moved… after moving the read later button, I clicked it to remember a page and it jumped back to the main toolbar.

The extension is a great idea; but my main toolbar is too crowded to keep those large buttons there. If you could make it so those buttons could be moved like most other buttons, it would be great.

    November 9th, 2007 Anon E Moose
  11. I just saw this mentioned on Download Squad. I’ve wanted something like this for ages.

Have to agree that I’d like a way to have this on several computers.

Could I suggest that the Reading List should be stored in a nominated folder in Firefox’s regular bookmarks.

That way whatever method I use to synchronize bookmarks across computers (I use Foxmarks now but have used Google in the past) could take care of the synchronization and all I’d have to do is install Read it Later on another computer and tell it which bookmarks folder is where I keep my list.

  14. This is an excellent idea.

Is it possible to make smaller “read later” icons and also be able to move them to a different toolbar other than the navigation bar?

Personally, I have merged my browser chrome onto the menu bar and have disabled the nav bar in order to maximize my browser window.

    Thanks for the excellent add-on!

  19. Funny.. for a couple of years now I’ve had a bookmark toolbar folder named “ReadL8R” that I’ve been moving interesting site into. Needless to say it’s a bit hard to manage and getting very large.

If this isn’t already a part of “Read it Later”, then I hope there might be some easy way to import an existing folder of bookmarks into it.

I’m sure Nate knows already how he might do this, but if it were my plug-in and I wanted to allow folks to keep things in-sync, I might at a minimum keep the “RIL” links actually stored AS a bookmark folder and just let the other sync plug-ins (FoxMarks… which I also use) do the work for it. Of course, for this app it might need a bit more to sync the other attributes.

  23. This add-on is great! BTW I have a suggestion. It would be great to have a web service which stores the reading list. So it would be possible to collect the reading list on more than one computer but having access to the reading list from everywhere. It doesn’t need to be a new web service. It would be possible to use del.icio.us by storing the reading list as links for a tag.

Euh, the extension would even get better by introducing an option allowing me to turn off the automatic jump to the next page by clicking on “Mark as read”. Sometimes, you wand to follow up one or more links before reading the next page on list, and, well…

Moreover, this functionality is kind of unexpected and unlogical, I can’t find some “read next” in “mark as read” ;)

  70. Wow, this is exactly what I needed! For the past year or so I’ve been keeping articles I want to read at some future date saved in my Bloglines RSS feeds — which clutters up the feeds rather quickly. This is a much better solution!

    Two suggestions:

    1) A way to browse the entire reading list. I have dozens of saved URLs but only the first 11 or so show up in the drop-down box. One option would be to show them in the sidebar.

    2) An option to automatically group saved pages from the same domain under a folder for that site. I have a lot of Lifehacker saved pages, for instance, and it would be neat if I could have tell the extension that when saved pages from the same domain reach X saved articles then move them to a folder for that domain. (And allow random to span the folders).

Thanks for the amazing idea and great work!

  85. Great plugin! Like Ted said… if there were an offline mode for this plugin I would be in heaven. That is, click a “go offline” button and it downloads the complete web pages in your reading list (including images) locally so you can read them on the road.

  86. hello,
first of all… Great idea!!! Exactly what I was looking for, so I installed it directly. But when using it I found some issues:
    - On startup only the “read something” button is displayed
    - Page can only be added on right mouse-click
    - Then “mark this page as read” button appears, but stays there if you switch tabs
    - When clicking “mark this page as read”, then the “read this page later” appears…
    - I missed the configuration (options) in the extension list. Config now is only available in drop down from “read this page later” button

It might be that this great extension isn’t compatible with other extensions? Hopefully these things can be fixed soon because I really want to use it!!!

    regards,
    Peet

  89. Hi,

Great add-on! It scratches an itch I had for years. I think I will be using this a lot.

Two remarks. It seems the “Read something from your reading list” icon cannot be moved to a different toolbar, whereas the “Read this page later” icon can. Many people customize their toolbars, so you might want to look into this.

Another thing is a feature suggestion: a way of automatically discarding “obsolete” items from the reading list. In my experience, many things I want to read today stay interesting for only a couple of weeks. A way to indicate an expiry date would be great.

    Thanks!
    Frank

I thought it was maybe because of my theme, so I changed to the Default Firefox theme and restarted and reinstalled RIL, but it still didn’t show me the buttons. I’d love to use this plugin (especially in correlation with Foxmarks) but I don’t know how to get the buttons to show up. November 16th, 2007 Dr Dorne
  126. I have been looking for something like this for a while and am beginning to love this execution, but some odd quirks are proving quite annoying.

Like the unmovable icons/buttons that have already been mentioned, they’re almost a deal-breaker for someone who likes to keep their browser organized from nav-bar to status-bar. Also, they’re still too big (wide) IMO.

And something I think will be really helpful for the power-users (and me); keyboard shortcuts! They will also provide a way to do away with those buttons all together (am a minimalist :] ).

One more thing, this is kinda embarrassing, I love this site, have subscribed to the feed as well, but not having to be directed to the “read-later-empty” page will be a great revision. Maybe it could show an off-line version of the message instead?

    November 17th, 2007 Scio

  128. Great plugin! This really helps.
Just one problem though. The “mark as read”-button seems to have a life of its own sometimes. Almost every time I have added a page with digg-comments, the mark as read-button never appears. I don’t know why this happens. Sometimes, the problems sorts itself when I digg the article but that is rare. This problems doesn’t only appear on Digg, but mostly.
Also, could you make the toolbar buttons a little bit smaller? They make my toolbar too high when using small icons.
    Thank you.

  135. Great extension! Just 3 suggestions:

    * “Surf reading list in order” pulls up items from newest to oldest. I would prefer oldest to newest. Perhaps there should be 3 options: Oldest first, Newest first, Random ?

    * An option to automatically mark read item as “read”? That seems more intuitive to me, since it’s more similar to how email inboxes work (when you open an item, the item is automatically marked “read”), and this extension is sorta like an inbox of webpages.

    * The ability to using a dialog box to select the “Read Later”. That way, the folder can be a subfolder, instead of one of the main folders. This gives the user more flexibility.

    Thanks for an excellent extension!

  156. Hi Nate,

Great idea for an extension, and love that you decided to use a normal Bookmarks folder (I do use Foxmarks, so this is awesome) - and thanks for fising the icon size :) but…

    I have two issues now…

    1. At one time, the ‘Read it later’ toolbar icon would show a green checkmark if that page was already marked to read later. Clicking the button again would stimply toggle it between read and unread - this visual state indicator (gree checkmark) was VERY convenient, but doesn’t seem to work now… I’d love it if you could add it back.

Also, it appears to have some minor compatability issues with the StumbleUpon extension (I’m using the latest 3.16) - I had to uninstall both, then install Read It Later first, then install StumbleUpon - seems to have fixed the problem, at least for now.

Otherwise - this is an awesome extension, and combined with StumbleUpon and Foxmarks - well, my wife is really pissed at me now, because I got her hooked… ;)

  157. I’m using 0.6. As mentioned by others, the reading list falls out of sync with the bookmarks folder after restarting Firefox, even though I am using the default folder.

My “save/read” button simply doesn’t work. If I visit a page I have marked to read, I see the green down button but clicking it does nothing. The drop-down menu works, though, if I want to mark a new page to read later.

  174. Why not just install the del.icio.us bookmark extension. Right-click all links that you want to read later and give them a tag (e.g., ‘digglater’). Del.icio.us can even spit out an RSS feed for that list that you’re making allowing you to take it with you or publish it elsewhere.

  209. Id I miss something or does sync not work out of the box. I’m kinda pissed I was using your plugin to adding a bunch of stuff to read it later then i picked the folder ‘read it later’ and all of my stuff disappeared. Does it store the bookmarks in a separate folder by default until you specify that one you want? If so WHERE is said folder?

    December 6th, 2007 JD
  210. I am not sure if this was addressed yet but I am kind of annoyed. I begin using read it later putting what I wanted to ‘read later’ in the list, I then chose a folder and all of a sudden all of my read it nows were gone, after some thinking I figured it was because they were not being stored in a folder previously but rather on your server or something, is there anyway to get them back? Also once you chose a folder does the ‘reading list’ page no longer work? It appears that everytime I click it it says ‘you have no pages in your reading list’ although I do…

    December 6th, 2007 JD
  211. Hey JD,

Sorry your having trouble with the extension, I appreciate you following
up with me when you had problems, it helps the process to finally bring
this plugin to a stable version.

I’ve got a couple of questions, you said you were trying to sync with
the plugin? What plugin were you using to sync with?

Also, if you go up to the ‘Bookmarks’ menu in Firefox, and choose
‘Organize Bookmarks’, are there multiple ‘Read It Later’ folders in your
bookmarks? If so, are the missing items in one of them?

The reading list should be stored in a folder in your standard Firefox
bookmarks called ‘Read It Later’ or a folder that you specify.

Finally, can you check to see if you are getting any errors while using
the plugin, there are short instructions for doing this here:
    http://www.ideashower.com/blog/read-it-later-ver-06/ under ‘If you have
    problems with Version 0.6′

Hopefully we can get this fixed for you!

    Thanks!

  213. I’ll try to explain it better. Basically i started adding articles to read later with the plugin, it would add them to my reading list page and show under the reading list toolbar icon. After re-reading the instructions I decided to pick a folder, so I went to options>select read it now bookmark folder, and chose the ‘read it later’ bookmark folder, then all of a sudden all of my articles disappeared, which after thinking I figured that my articles must not have been stored in the read it now bookmark folder to begin with and elsewhere (your server?).

Its not a matter of having more then one read it now folder, I understand that, its a matter of that when you first install the plugin and start adding articles, then select what folder you want it apparently purges your existing articles OR it can’t find them, which is why I would like to know where the heck they are.

    December 6th, 2007 JD
  214. @JD:
Did you check your Firefox bookmarks for the original ‘Read It Later’ folder as I described above?
The extension doesn’t delete anything unless you mark an item as read, and since they are stored in your Firefox Bookmarks, I wouldn’t expect them to disappear.

    December 7th, 2007 Nate
  215. There seems to be a slight bug when the “page” added to the list is just a link to an image. In that case, the “Mark as Read” option does not appear in the menu button, so I have to manually go and remove it from my bookmarks list.

    For example, http://www.infocustech.com/skyscrapers/worlds%20tallest%20buildings.jpg

    December 7th, 2007 Skwirkle
  216. Huh, as soon as I wrote that comment, that particular linked page seemed to work fine with the Mark as Read function.

But this one still does not let me mark it as read.

    http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc157/primederivation/yahoo-not-recognize-firefox.png?t=1196655281

    December 7th, 2007 Skwirkle
  217. I don’t know how else to explain it. When the extension is first installed and you goto options to chose the folder there is no ‘dot’ next to it indicating that the read it later folder is even being used. If you already have stuff in your ‘read it later’ then as soon as you chose the actual ‘read it later’ bookmarks folder your existing stuff goes missing.

IDK maybe i screwed something up from the start but all I know is that i began marking stuff to read later, then decided to try to sync with foxmarks, i chose the bookmarks folder and all disappeared. Now that the bookmarks folder is chosen its adhering to the correct folder.

Try it for yourself, make a fresh plugin install and before you chose your read it later bookmark folder start chosing stuff to read later, then goto your options and chose the read it later bookmarks folder and watch what happens…

    December 7th, 2007 JD
  218. I started using RIL at work and wanted to use it at home as well. I use foxmarks to sync bookmarks between work and home. When I installed RIL at home, it added a second Read It Later bookmark folder which was of course empty.

  224. Any news on an update to fix the several bugs that have been mentioned? as I find that although a great extension its erratic nature really forces me to uninstall it (actually v0.5.4 was better)

    December 10th, 2007 Polo
  225. Polo,

Just wanted to update you on the status of things at the Idea Shower, like the Read It Later extension.

I’m in my last week of my current job. I’ve left that position to dedicate more time to Idea Shower and contract work. Things will be busy (and therefore slow) over the next couple of weeks but in January, once the dust has settled, you can expect many updates and releases (including some for Read It Later).

I’m doing my best to keep the updates rolling, and soon I’ll be able to keep up with them. I appreciate the support and hope to get you guys updates soon.

    Thanks!

P.S. I’ve emailed you v0.5.2.1 (which was the last of the 0.5 versions) if you’d like to use it.
